The Vanished Town
A touring exhibition, produced by Aboa Vetus Museum, Turku, Finland within the framework of the Medieval Museums Network in the Nordic Region (EU project,”three touring exhibitions”)
30/1 – 30/4 1998
Archaeological excavations always attract many visitors. But the archaeologist does not always have the opportunity to tell people directly from the trench all that is going on during or after an investigation. The Vanished Town was just as much an educational programme as an exhibition. Here everyone, not least children and young people, had the opportunity to test the way archaeologists work, discover what methods are used to investigate life in a vanished town, and learn how the work continues on the finds which come to light. There were examples of how broken pottery vessels are analysed, pieces of bone studied and coins dated. All this shows how archaeological knowledge is built up by studying small details, which then gain significance in a larger context. The picture of the vanished town becomes ever clearer with each new excavation.
